This week sees the release of John Simpson's new serigraph, Omega and The Bear. This is Simpson's first publication commissioned by leading contemporary print publishers Eyestorm. Following a two month trip to Canada John Simpson visited Atelier Ji with Angie Davey (Eyestorm) to discuss work on his new serigraph. The resulting collaboration was Omega and The Bear, a beautiful 9 colour screenprint, which has already met with audiences in New York (Affordable Art Fair) and London (Multiplied - Christies)
Simpson's original drawings for the new work were made directly on to newsprint using a type of printmaking know as monotypes. Simpson uses this direct method of ink transfer to create a unique series of marks for each printable layer. Such marks, by there very nature, are unobtainable through drawing or painting in a classical style. The title of Simpson's new work Omega and The Bear refers to a prose poem written by Edvard Munch entitled ‘Alpha and Omega’. Written as an alternative version of Adam and Eve, Omega (Eve) decides that the company of animals is preferable, over that of Alpha (Adam).
